To keep your Painted Picket Fence looking its best, regular maintenance is essential. Over time, dirt, dust, and environmental debris settle on the surface, dulling the appearance and potentially harming the paint finish.

A simple cleaning routine protects your investment. Use a soft-bristled brush or sponge with mild soap and water to gently wash the fence. Avoid harsh chemicals and power washers, which can strip paint and damage the wood underneath.

We recommend cleaning at least once or twice yearly. If you're in a wet climate or near the coast, increase frequency to tackle salt spray and moisture that accelerate deterioration.

Despite best efforts, wear and tear will eventually show. Watch for fading, peeling, or chipping paint. Address these early to prevent further damage and extend the life of your fence. Prompt touch-ups are far more effective than waiting for problems to worsen.

Over time, your fence may fade, peel, or chip. Sand minor damage lightly and apply fresh paint in the original colour and type. Replace any cracked or damaged panels before repainting.

Clear away plants, shrubbery, and fixtures like hanging baskets. Clean the fence thoroughly to help paint adhere properly, then sand to create a smooth surface.

Apply primer first to prevent mould and improve paint adhesion. Next is the application of the paint. You can apply with a brush or a sprayer. A sprayer takes less time and gives a more even coat, but wont get in to all the nooks crannies, a brush will still be needed for the finer detail

Use an appropriately sized brush to reach all gaps and corners. Apply a second coat as recommended by the paint manufacturer, following their instructions carefully for the best results.

Moisture is one of the biggest threats to your painted fence. Rain, humidity, and standing water can cause wood to warp, rot, or discolour over time. Regular inspection is essential to catch problems early.

Look for mud and debris trapped under the pales or around posts, and remove them promptly. Check the fence surface for signs of mould, mildew, or dark staining. Any damp patches should be treated immediately to prevent decay from spreading.

Weather doesn't just affect paint application—it continuously impacts your fence's condition. Sun exposure fades paint and causes cracking, while rain and wind gradually wear away protective coatings. Keeping your fence clean and addressing moisture issues quickly will help maintain both its appearance and structural integrity.
